Dogecoin is a Cryptocurrency invented by developers Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus. It was started as a joke in 2013, designed just for fun to serve no real purpose other than generating a few laughs.
Dogecoin is named after an internet meme centred around the image of a Shiba Inu dog with bad spelling habits - thus "doge" instead of "dog".
According to the Dogecoin Co-founder Billy Markus, the correct pronunciation is " dohj coin". But most people prefer to call it "dog" or "doggy".
What makes Dogecoin popular?
Dogecoin got more popular and increase in value after the world richest man also CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Elon Musk started hyping it on his Twitter handle.
On January 28, Elon Musk tweeted a faux "Dogue" magazine cover. He has since continued to tweet about the coin. Tweeted "who let the doge out" and "No highs, no lows, only Doge".
He also conducted an online vote asking his followers that "The future currency of Earth" with the option of "Dogecoin to the moon" and "All other crypto combines".

Elon Musk's hyping of Dogecoin on his Twitter handle with 46.3 million followers prompted the Dogecoin popularity to skyrocket followed by other influentials like Snoop Dogg, Soulja Boy and Mr Simmons, sharing memes and tweet with their followers.
Dogecoin price moved almost 1,500% since the start of this year following Elon Musk's tweets.
